National Forest Condition Survey
The vitality of forests is recorded annually as part of the National Forest Condition Survey (WZE). Thereby, the condition of the crown serves as an indicator of the vitality of forest trees. The WZE has been conducted in the old federal states since 1984 and in the new federal states since 1990.
The nationwide survey is conducted in July and August every year using a systematic 16 km x 16 km sampling grid (Level I grid) to assess approximately 10,000 trees. Representative results for the most important tree species are provided at the federal level.
Since January 1, 2014, the National Forest Condition Survey has been carried out on the basis of the federal regulation ForUmV, which is anchored in the Federal Forest Act (§41a paragraph 6BWaldG).
