Dot design
or method of parameter recording
The standardized dot design used in the Forest Condition Survey in Germany is the so-called cross-transect method, consisting of four 6-tree plots.
These are located at a distance of 25 meters from the center point, with one in each cardinal direction. Deviations from this design occur only in a few exceptional cases. In one federal state, for example, the 6-tree plots are distributed along a single line.
At each plot, the next six trees of the dominant stand class (Kraft’s tree classes 1–3) are selected and permanently marked. If trees are lost from the sample due to forestry measures, mortality, or natural disasters, the affected trees are recorded one last time and replaced by the nearest candidate in the area.
