Litterfall

Litterfall analyses involve recording the weight and chemical composition of fallen fruits, leaves, and twigs/branches. They are an important aspect in the investigation of nutrient cycling, humus formation, and assessing the regeneration capacity of tree species. Additionally, mast years—years with a high occurrence of fruits (e.g., for beech and oak) are regularly recorded. This information is essential for evaluating the carbon balance of trees and understanding the periodic development of animal populations, including the associated risks of infection and damage.

Assessed parameters:

  • Amount of litterfall
  • Litter chemistry (element concentrations)
