Phenology
The visible developmental stages of trees throughout the year are an important indicator of their vitality. In addition, temporal changes in the occurrence of these development stages can be an indication of changing environmental conditions, for instance in regards to climate change, the deposition of air pollutants or the dynamics of forest pest outbreaks. At the same time, changes in phenology can also be used to draw conclusions about the adaptability of tree species, such as water use, growth and regeneration capacity. Besides their relevance to forestry, phenological studies also offer insights into other fields, such as the harmful potential of allergenic or human pathogenic pathogens (e.g. oak processionary moth).
