Provision of data as part of international and national reporting

For the three decades, the Level II programme has been providing solid, quality-controlled data on environmental drivers and their effects on forest ecosystems. The data is used to fulfill various reporting obligations arising from international agreements and national guidelines and strategies. These include:

  • International Reporting under the Clean Air Convention (‘Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution’ (CLRTAP)).
  • The NEC Directive of the European Union. European countries have committed to reducing emissions of air pollutants. Since 2018, monitoring also includes air pollution impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity.
  • The State Initiative Core Indicators (LIKI). Acid and nitrogen deposition on open fields in forests are part of a selection of 25 environment-specific sustainability indicators.
  • the Federal Government's Forest Report. This shows the development of forests in Germany.
  • The German Adaptation Strategy (DAS). Soil moisture data from Level II plots are reported for the climate change adaptation strategy.

Further data usage at international, national, and state levels, reported in various intervals, complement the initiatives listed above.
